The primary function of the Rapid Intervention Crew (RIC) is to rescue trapped firefighters. RIC is specially trained and equipped to respond quickly to situations where firefighters may become lost, trapped, or in distress during firefighting operations. This crew's primary responsibility is to ensure the safety of the personnel who are engaged in firefighting efforts. They stand by in a ready state, monitoring radio communications and conditions at the scene, so that they can immediately intervene if a distress call is made or if there is an indication that a firefighter is in danger.

While providing first aid may be a part of the responsibilities after a rescue, it is not the main focus of the RIC. Similarly, conducting fire investigations and managing incident command involve different aspects of operations that do not align with the immediate rescue and safety functions that the RIC is specifically trained for. Their sole goal is to protect the lives of firefighters working in hazardous situations and to ensure that help is available in emergency circumstances. This specific focus underscores their critical role in maintaining firefighter safety on the scene.
